
#32 Chal Fanning
Head Coach, Director of Baseball Operations
Head Coach Chal Fanning returns for his tenth season with the San Luis Obispo Blues. Before coaching for the Blues, Fanning played high school ball for Paso Robles High School until he graduated in 1987 and began playing for Cuesta College. In 1991, Fanning transferred to Cal Poly and began playing baseball as a Mustang for coach Steve McFarland. Shortly after graduating from Cal Poly with an Ornamental Horticulture degree, Fanning began coaching the Blues in 1994 until 1997. He resumed his Head coach position in 2006 and has accumulated 314 wins since the beginning of his coaching career with the Blues. Fanning has recruited and coached eight players who went on to play in the Major Leagues, including three-time Major League All-Star who is now taking over closer duties for the Oakland Athletics, Brian Fuentes. Fanning also recruited and coached more than 100 players who have been drafted and 16 All-Americans.
#18 Anthony Pannone
Assistant Coach
Anthony Pannone returns to the Blues for his second year as assistant coach. Last year Pannone worked part time with the Blues and served as a pitching coach for another team with former major league player Casey Candale. In addition to coaching the Blues, Pannone has given lessons at the Central Coach Baseball Academy and coached a local high school club team, the Wolfpack, and the Cal Poly club baseball team. Before coming to the Central Coast, Pannone played professional baseball for the San Francisco Giants minor league from 2001 to 2006. Though Pannone played infield through his high school and college baseball careers., he entered the minor league as a pitcher.
Pannone currently is finishing his bachelor of science degree in agricultural science at Cal Poly and will be attending Texas A&M graduate school in the fall to study agricultural leadership, education and communications.
