The SLO Blues (17-6 Overall, 13-6 CCL) defeated the Santa Maria Valley Packers (11-12) by a score of 6-1 in a non-league contest Wednesday night.
The pitching staff for the Blues combined to hold the Packers to only 2 hits. Starting pitcher Paul Twining pitched 4 innings, allowing only 2 hits, a walk, and had 5 strikeouts. One of the hits was a solo home run to left by Packers DH Skyler Ellis. 5 Blues relievers combined to pitch perferct baseball from the 5th innng on, allowing no hits and no walks, and striking out 7 batters. RHP Michael Holback (1-0) got the win. LHP Lars Liguori (6th), LHP Dylan Mandoza (7th), RHP Kyle Martin (8th), and RHP Vince Wheeland (9th) all pitched an inning each.
RF Brandon Wood, in his 1st appearance for the Blues, scored the games first run. Wood doubled down the left field line to lead off the 4th inning, and later scored on an RBI groundout by C Jo Jo Sharrar. The Blues scored the go ahead run with 2 outs in the 6th, when 1B Wade Hinkle was hit by a pitch, and then scored on an RBI double by Sharrar. 3B Dylan Gavin (1) hit a 2-run home run in the 8th inning.
Offensively, the Blues were led by Sharrar, who went 1 for 4, with 2 RBI's, a run scored, a double, and a walk. Gavin went 2 for 5, with 2 RBI's, a run scored, and a home run. LF Sal Belfonte went 2 for 3, with an RBI, a run scored, a scarifice fly, a stolen base, and a walk.
The Blues have a much deserved day off after playing 15 games in 14 days. The next game is Friday night, July 1st, when the Blues will host the Menlo Park Legends in game one of a 3-game series.
