SLO BLUES 4 @ Conejo Oaks 2
7/16/11, George "Sparky" Anderson Field, Thousand Oaks, CA
The San Luis Obispo Blues (24-10-1, 15-9-1) rode an excellent fundamental team effort to victory over the Conejo Oaks (19-15-1,13-14-1) Saturday afternoon in Thousand Oaks, CA. The Blues had outstanding performances on both sides of the ball, allowing only six hits and no committing no errors defensively while also receiving offensive contributions from both the top and bottom of the lineup.
The Blues pitching staff had an exceptional day headlined by Oregon State-bound southpaw Carlos Rodriguez (1-0). Rodriguez got his first win of the season Saturday after striking out eight and allowing only two runs over six innings pitched. Long Beach State Dirtbag Josh Frye (2-3) relieved Rodriguez after the Blues took the lead 3-2 in the top of the seventh and pitched two hitless innings and allowed only one base runner. Vince Wheeland converted his team-leading third save of the season after striking out the side in the ninth.
The offense was led by first baseman Zac Elgie's three hit day. Elgie's solo home run in the second inning started the Blues scoring and his double off the wall in left-center field in the ninth gave the Blues an extra run of insurance before Wheeland was brought in to finish the game. Elgie now leads the team in doubles, home runs, total bases, and slugging percentage. Also having a notable day was center fielder Brannon Champagne's RBI single in the seventh which scored Elgie for the go-ahead run.
The Blues return to "Sparky" Anderson Field Sunday to take on the Oaks for the sixth and final time this season. The teams will finish Friday night's tie before starting the second game. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM.
