SLO BLUES 6 @ MLB Academy Barons 3
7/18/11, MLB Urban Academy, Compton, CA
The San Luis Obispo Blues (26-11, 17-10) improved their season record to 5-1 against the Urban Academy Barons with an errorless 6-3 victory Monday night. The Blues offense had eight different batters reach base, setting up starting pitcher Travis Huber (3-0) for his third win of the season. Huber allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out seven Barons over his six innings pitched. Huber now leads the team in innings pitched (45.0) and is second in strikeouts (44).
Leadoff-hitting shortstop Adam Frazier continues to set the table for the Blues offense, reaching base four times for the second consecutive game. Frazier finished the game 1-2 with an RBI and three walks and leads the team in batting (.354) and on-base percentage (.488). The Blues had two players with multihit games, second baseman Alex Detz and center fielder Brannon Champagne. Detz doubled, scored a run, and walked while Champagne scored two runs and and is now tied for the team lead in stolen bases with Sal Belfonte at 14. Other game highlights include right fielder Brandon Wood's two RBI triple in third inning, his third of the season. Wood now leads the Blues in triples with Dylan Gavin and also scored a run after walking in the sixth.
Cal Poly-bound and Florida Marlin draftee Nick Grim (0-1) relieved Huber in the top of the seventh, striking out six while allowing only two hits and zero runs. After giving up consecutive singles to start off his tenth appearance of the summer, Grim retired nine straight batters to give the Blues a 6-3 win and himself his second save.
The Blues have a rare day off Tuesday before coming back to San Luis Obispo's Sinsheimer Stadium Wednesday to face the Santa Barbara Foresters (28-8, 20-8) in a critical two-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM.
