The San Luis Obispo Blues (10-4, 7-4 CCL) defeated the MLB Urban Academy Barons (4-12, 4-12) with a walk-off run in the 9th inning in the second game of three against the Barons on Tuesday night, ending the game with a score of 4-3.
In the bottom of the 3rd, the Blues scored their first two runs on four hits. After leading off with a double, Thomas Bernal scored on a single up the middle by Max Homick. Homick then scored on a single by Sal Belfonte.
The Barons went ahead in the top of the 6th with a three run homer by Andrew Allen, and they kept their new lead until the bottom of the 9th. Bernal hit a double to left field, after which Austin Flores hit an RBI single to tie the game. Dylan Gavin pinch ran for Flores and stole on the second pitch. After a throwing error by the catcher, Gavin reached third and then home on a second throwing error by center field. Gavin's run put the Blues ahead to win the game 4-3.
Starting pitcher Travis Huber pitched the first five innings, striking out eight and allowing only three hits. Receiving the win for the Blues was relief pitcher Harmen Sidhu (2-0). Sidhu struck out the side in the 7th inning, and after loading the bases with one out in the top of the 8th inning, he pulled it together and struck out the final two batters to end the inning. Together, the pitching staff threw a total of 17 strikeouts for the game.
The Blues play the last game of the series against the Barons tomorrow night at 7:30pm. Gates will open at 6:30. Charity partner of the game is the SLO California Highway Patrol.
